UNCC Seniors In-Home Support Programme Rhino Refugee Settlement, Terego District, Uganda Restoring Dignity. Sharing Compassion. Leaving No Senior Behind. The United Nationals Countryless Children (UNCC) operates a weekly Seniors In-Home Support Programme across Rhino Refugee Settlement to assist older persons who have no immediate caregiver, live alone, or are unable to care for themselves due to age, illness or disability. Every week, dedicated UNCC volunteers visit seniors in their homes to provide practical assistance, companionship and wellbeing support. Many of the seniors we serve are over 70 years of age and face significant challenges, including poor mobility, chronic illnesses, food insecurity and social isolation. Services Provided by UNCC Volunteers During weekly home visits, UNCC volunteers provide: Home wellbeing assessments and welfare checks. Assistance with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene. House cleaning and maintaining a safe living environment. Washing clothes, bedding and blankets. Making beds and organising sleeping areas. Haircuts, beard trimming and nail care. Preparation of meals and nutrition support. Monitoring medication and encouraging treatment adherence. Accompanying seniors to health centres and hospital appointments. Emergency referrals for urgent medical care. Blood pressure monitoring where equipment is available. Emotional support, companionship and mental wellbeing checks. Distribution of food, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, soap and other essential household items when available. Supporting Seniors Without Caregivers Many elderly refugees have no family members to care for them. Some have been separated from loved ones by conflict and displacement, while others have lost spouses or children. UNCC volunteers become a source of practical assistance, friendship and hope, ensuring that these seniors are not left to struggle alone. Our Challenge Despite the dedication of our volunteers, the demand for support continues to grow. Limited transport, shortages of food, hygiene supplies, medical equipment and emergency transport make it difficult to reach every senior who requires assistance. Emergency Response Today, the United Nationals Countryless Children (UNCC) Emergency Volunteer Team responded to an urgent medical call involving an elderly refugee requiring immediate medical attention in Rhino Refugee Settlement. Due to the absence of a dedicated ambulance within the settlement, UNCC volunteers mobilised immediately using a motorcycle (boda boda) to safely transport the elderly patient to Yinga Health Centre III for emergency assessment and treatment. The rapid response demonstrated the dedication and commitment of UNCC volunteers, who remain on call day and night to assist seniors and other vulnerable individuals in need. Interventions Provided Upon receiving the emergency call, the UNCC team: Responded immediately to the patient's location. Assisted the elderly patient with safe lifting and mobility. Provided physical support during transfer onto the motorcycle. Escorted the patient safely to Yinga Health Centre III. Assisted health workers during admission and registration. Monitored the patient's condition throughout transport. Provided emotional support and reassurance to the patient. Liaised with healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care. Continued follow-up with the patient after arrival at the health facility. Challenges Identified This incident highlights the urgent need for improved emergency transport services within Rhino Refugee Settlement. Many elderly refugees have limited mobility and rely on community volunteers to access healthcare. Without a functioning ambulance, vulnerable patients are often transported on motorcycles, which may not be suitable for frail older persons or those with serious medical conditions. UNCC Appeal UNCC urgently appeals to humanitarian partners, donors, government agencies and well-wishers around the world to support the establishment and operation of emergency medical transport services for seniors and vulnerable refugees. UNCC has completed the procurement of a humanitarian ambulance, which is intended to serve seniors and vulnerable communities across Rhino Refugee Settlement and surrounding areas. Additional support is now required to equip, register and operate the ambulance, including recruitment of trained paramedics and nurses, medical equipment, fuel and ongoing operational costs. Listening, Caring and Restoring Hope UNCC volunteers continue conducting regular Seniors Wellbeing Checks across Rhino, Imvepi and surrounding refugee communities, reaching older persons living alone or without immediate family support. UNCC remembers Mr Nego, a senior in Imvepi Refugee Settlement, who sadly passed away amid serious food insecurity, according to UNCC field records. His experience reinforces the urgent need for regular home visits, food assistance, health monitoring and stronger protection for vulnerable seniors. No senior should be forgotten. Play is fundamental to a child's healthy growth, learning, wellbeing and social development. In communities where toys and recreational materials are limited, UNCC volunteers use traditional knowledge, local games, storytelling, songs and safe locally available materials to create opportunities for children to play, learn and interact. UNCC promotes safe, inclusive and supervised play, ensuring children with disabilities and other vulnerable children are not left behind. Every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn and grow.

On #WorldRefugeeDay, UNHCR Representative in Uganda, Matthew Crentsil, delivered a powerful message from Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement — one of the 13 refugee-hosting districts in Uganda that are currently supporting over 1.9 million refugees. Uganda 🇺🇬 is upholding its globally recognized open-door policy, allocating land twice the size of Nairobi to welcome people fleeing conflict. But the challenges remain urgent — transit centers are operating at over 200% capacity, and food, water, shelter, and health services are severely strained. This World Refugee Day, we are reminded that solidarity must go beyond words — it must become action.

The UNHCR warns it has received only 17 percent of the funds needed to support refugees in Uganda. With over 1.8 million refugees in the country, food rations, staff, and services are being reduced. The agency is urgently appealing for additional support.
